Colors, Textures and Flavors

In the world of raw vegan, fresh and natural foods there is an amazing abundance of colors, textures and flavors that just make those foods be so pleasing and nutritious to our lovely and incredible bodies. There are ways in which those connections between human beings and nature became more visible, such as our overall attraction for things like sweets and fats, which comes from the old times when we needed to eat as much as possible from what we found available in order to be prepared for harder times, and there are also more subtle things that we only get to become more aware of by engaging into a deeper connection to our foods and our food choices.

By understanding our own physiology and natural way of being we are then able to make better and more conscious choices which are amazing both for our bodies and also for the environment. I think that when it comes to color there is best to include as many colors as possible in our food choices on a day to day basis. Foods of different colors have different properties and they all work together to support our health. Fruits, for example are naturally very colorful and sweet and they are made this way with the purpose of attracting us and convincing us to eat them in order to get their seeds spread and help those plants give birth to even more of their own. There is a subtle but amazing balance that leads the natural way of living and this balance is supported by those beautiful ways of interaction between plants and humans and also plants and other animals, as plants provide food for those other beings while they get their seeds spread in return.

When in comes to textures, of course there is this beautiful thing that comes with awareness when we mindfully interact with our foods. Textures can reveal themselves through our touch and also through our chewing of the food itself. Probably, one of the most intimate connections between humans and food happens during the process of chewing the food, a step that most of us, in a modern, fast pace life, forget to pay attention to, but that has a tremendous impact in our own health and so we should be paying more attention to it. The process of chewing is so important simply because it signals the brain to prepare for digestion, to prepare all the enzymes that are needed both through the chewing and later on in the digestion process that takes place in the stomach, it also brakes the food down into smaller pieces and literally represents the basis of the entire process of breaking down and assimilating of the food. There is also an experience that brings us pleasure and fulfillment especially when we eat the foods that we love and that were actually made for us to eat.

At the same time with chewing we also experience the flavors of the foods that we eat and the more awareness we bring into this process the more we learn to appreciate and be thankful for the life force that is being brought to our bodies through this eating process. We learn to respect our food and to have a balanced relationship with the foods that we eat and also respect the work of other people that might have been involved in the process of bringing this food to our table. Food is connection that on one way it is connecting us with nature and it is feeding us, helping us heal and grow into amazing human beings and on the other side it is also a connection to those other people who got involved in the raising and preparing of that food so that it could reach our table. By bringing some gratitude into this picture we learn to live in a happy, balanced and fulfilling way with nature, with other human beings and also with ourselves.
